Our work does not necessarily follow the traditional trajectory of a conservation foundation. Rather, from the very beginning — as we came together in memory of a loved one — we found ourselves engaging with an ever wider group of supporters, colleagues, and organizations who wanted to work alongside us. This engagement gradually broadened our horizons and deepened our mission over time.
In particular, site managers and curators welcomed our support not only for the practical conservation work that was needed. They were also drawn to the ethos that drives us — what one site manager and member of the clergy at the Basilica di Santo Spirito so beautifully called our mission as “conservazione dal cuore” — conservation from the heart.
The inspiration behind each of our major projects has guided, and in turn been shaped by, the proposals and vision of the conservators and restorers at the Bastioni Association. The universal attributes of humanity such as — humility, death, life, faith and healing, charity, prayer — are reflected in these proposals, and they mirror the journey we ourselves are on as we continue to evolve and adapt to the loss of Mircea, and as our work seeks to offer insight and meaning in a world around us in rapid transformation.
